How to Play the Violin - Practice That Works
Many people want to know how to play the violin but many people fall at the first hurdle of knowing how to practice. It actually took me years to learn how to practice well and if I had known this one technique then I could have made much quicker progress in my earlier years of learning.
A lot of budding musicians see practice as a chore or something that has to be done everyday for a certain length of time. Whilst it is true that the more you practice the better you get, it is also even more true that the quality of your practice is of a high standard.
Now I am going to say something that might rock a few boats in the musical world. here it comes. Are you ready?
'You do not have to practice for a set amount every single day'!
There you go I said it. 'But why'? I hear you ask. Well it's all to do with the quality. After years of teaching instruments myself I find that if myself or my students are given a task of say, practicing for 1 hour a day. it becomes a chore. Whilst many will achieve this 1 hour practice they are literally switched off during the whole 60 minutes. They are just playing to get through the hour.
It is much better for budding musicians to set daily goals. Then practice as much as you need to in order to reach this goal. This keeps you focused as you work and leaves you feeling accomplished when you have reached your goal.
So for example when learning how to play the violin and you have a new piece of music to learn. Pick out a particular passage in that piece. it could be just 8 bars long. Now work on those particular 8 bars until they are sounding great. Job done! Good quality practice.
