how do you use a tuarte mute for violin?
i was suppose to buy a mute for class, and when i went to go buy it the tuarte mute is what they gave me. i have NO idea how to use it. help? there are two little black rubber circle things.
Tourte is a brand. It's a rubber mute. If you notice it has a sort of lip on one side of the circle and on the other side there are some holes and some slots leading to the holes. Place the mute sideways between the A and D strings (the two middle strings) between the bridge and the tailpiece and twist it so that the strings go into the slots and end up inside the holes. Make SURE that the LIP is toward the bridge. Now slide the mute toward the bridge until you can hook the lip on the bridge. DO NOT FORCE IT! This will give you a softer , sweeter sound while playing. Composers often specify that instruments be muted.
Or you could just wait until you get to class and ask your teacher to show you.
