Would a regular microphone work on a violin?
My school's talent show is scheduled to be tomorrow, and the organizer teacher wants me to play in front of a mic, because apparently my violin's sound is too small to be carried across the whole room.
Will a regular mic (like the ones for singing, but on a stand) make my playing sound bad? (I couldn't really hear anything, only a lot of echoing, because I was on stage.) Is there any advice as to how close I should position my violin or anything of that sort?
PS i am doing a solo, Meditation from Thais
Speaking from a recording standpoint, there are better and worse microphones to use for the truest sound of a violin in a studio, but most regular microphones will work well for live performance. If you need to cut through for a solo, close micing is probably the way to go, especially given the acoustics of the room and the circumstances of the talent show.
To go for the best sound, and if you can get a mic stand to do this, I would position the mic so that it is above you and at least 1 foot (preferably 2 or more feet) away and pointing into the middle of your instrument to keep the sound from being too shrill and squeaky. If that doesn't give you the volume you need to be heard in the room above the ambient noise, you can go closer to the mic, but the resulting sound will be less natural sounding.
