Violin pickup and physics question..?
How can I create an improvised or homemade violin pick up? I can't buy one because its too expensive.
Question on physics. If I put (apply, sprinkle wtever suits you) iron fillings on a violin string and the violin is played in front of a microphone, will it produce a louder sound? (microphones have magnets right?) Just curious..
i suspect buying a pickup is still cheaper than all the parts that you would need to buy to make one yourself.
A magnetic pickup consists of a permanent magnet wrapped with a coil of a few thousand turns of fine enameled copper wire. The vibration of the nearby soft-magnetic strings modulate the magnetic flux linking the coil, thereby inducing an alternating voltage through the coil of wire.

no. the microphone is not a "pickup" - it is just capturing and amplifying sound waves, not the modifications to a magnetic field that the pickup is based on. while microphones do have magnets in them, these are acting like pickups for the motion of the diaphram in the microphone.
i.e. pickup detects motion of metallic strings in presence of the magnetic field that the pickup defines.
for the microphone case, you've got an intermediate step - going from sound to moving the diaphram. then the rest is similar
