Any violin practice tips?
I've been playing violin for a while and my teacher wants me to try out for all-state, which is in October.
I used to do the Suzuki Method and they didn't teach a lot of third position so now my teachers making me practice Wohlfart book two and Sevcik. I practice for an hour each day but I don't feel like I'm actually accomplishing anything much. Any tips on how to make practice more efficient?
Those books are excellent. I use them myself with my own students. It takes a long time to see improvement, and if you are practicing an hour each day, you will get better, I promise. Set goals for yourself, such as...I will be able to play exercise #7 in Sevcik (I don't have the book in front of me, just throwing a number out there, it's not significant) at say, 20 bpm faster than I do today by next Thursday, and then slowly push yourself to play faster.
There are lots of key signatures represented in the Sevcik and Wohlfahrt. Be sure you practice the corresponding scale first, and memorize the finger position so that when you encounter accidentals, you'll know which way to move your finger. Practice different scales in third position, and memorize each finger pattern for the scales. Hint: If you start any major scale on your first finger, the finger pattern is the same as all other major scales; in other words, if you play A major scale in first position starting on the G string, your finger position is the same as playing C major in third position, starting on the G string (until you shift, and even then, if you shift at the same degree in the scale your finger position will not change. So pay attention to what happens to your finger pattern when you start on a different finger (say, playing D major, starting on the G string, in third position, you'd start on finger #2...) This will help you with your intonation.
