Wondering what my violin might be worth...?
I have a Neurner-Horsteiner violin which was made in 1923. It has the luthiers signiture in it, but is hard to read his hand writing..It looks like it says either Math. or Malh. Lofler (or Sofler...thought it looks more like an "L") It was made in Mittenwald, so I know it is a German violing (pre W W 2...)If anyone can help me, it would be great..Oh, It is in really good shape, as it is one of the three that I use regularly..has a nice sound to it...
Does your violin look anything like the one listed on Ebay right now? If so, the price they are asking for theirs is within the ballpark of proper, so yours might bring about the same price. I did notice that they have dropped the price a bit because of zero bids on an earlier auction.
A rare art object can only be accurately valued by the price at which something similar has recently sold, don't you agree? An old violin is not anything like a new washing machine or a new car. Each old violin is different from all others because it is hand made and no two are alike. If the instrument is old enough, the maker is probably no longer alive and, therefore, cannot make any more of them. So, the price usually goes up. This is why fine antiques and art objects often appreciate in value as the years go by.
You should take your violin to a violin maker who specializes in authentications and appraisals. As a master violin maker, I have done this for over thirty years and have never offered a firm authentication and written appraisal without holding the violin in my hands and looking at it very carefully. There are too many fakes and forgeries out there and one can't be too careful about these things.
