What should an ideal relationship between instrumentalists and luthiers be like?
I've just gotten my cello back from a luthier for servicing, and am very satisfied with the way he made my instrument sound better. My cello is heavy by nature and can't resonate well. By knocking the sound post around, centering the bridge and changing the tailpiece gut, he was able to make it resonate powerfully.
My friend saw another luthier with the same problem with his violin and was told that the instrument needs to be shaved down to reduce its weight, and that it would cost some $1,000. I'd be damned if I let that luthier do that to my cello! So we can see that different luthiers seem to have different opinions on a similar problem. Is it good, then, to stick with a luthier if you find him reliable and providing of good service? Do luthiers build a regular client base whom they know well, like doctors or hairstylists?

i met many well-known musican at my shop. Yes.!!! Once, the luthier gets to know you, he or she can help you when you choose an instrument and tell you the pros and cons.
Also, if you need to customize or modify it a bit, only a luthier can do that well just like a doctor with his patient. The luthier gets to know your need and can response immediately.
