What are some beautiful violin solos/concertos?
I want to know what some of the most beautiful violin solo and/or concerto pieces are out there.
The "big" concertos are definitely the Beethoven, the Mendelssohn, the Brahms, the Tchaikovsky, and Vivaldi's four seasons concertos. You should listen to them all in their entirety, but it's a bit much at first so here's how I would start:
Mendelssohn in E minor: start w/ the 1st movement (possibly the most gorgeous violin piece period)
Brahms: The second movement is lovely, it's slow and delicate; the third movement is lively and intense
Tchaikovsky: The main theme of the first movement is very famous and beautiful, the second movement is hauntingly dark
Vivaldi: All of the four seasons are quite short, do them all!, but I would start w/ spring 1st mvt and summer 3rd mvt
Beethoven: This one has to grow on you; the third movement (bright and lively) is probably the most recognizable
The second movement of Bach's E major and the first and third movements of his A minor concertos are nice, they have more of a Baroque dance feel. A few non-concerto works with prominent violin would be Beethoven's two Romances for Violin and Orchestra (G major and F major), they're sweet and very famous, and also Pas de Deux from the Nutcracker (very lush and sweet piece, it's quite famous). Also try Bach's Air on a G String and Albinoni's Adagio (not quite solos but they are beautiful; the air is sweet, the adagio is extremely tragic)
There's a lot more (Prokofiev, more Vivaldi concertos...), but these are the real jewels. Hope this helps!
