Violin squeaking problems?
Im currently playing the academic overture by brahms in orchestra, and i SQUEAK!
i always squeak when i play in the high positions (like 9th+ position?) with the fortissimo sixteenth notes. i hear others playing it perfectly smooth and i dont know how they do it... I tried changing the angle, amount of rosin, and placement etc. on my bow.
Since this section is fortissimo i play it closer to the bridge and have a hefty amount of bow pressure..
The squeak sounds like the pressure made whenever I switch the direction of the bow on the metal string (when I "saw" my bow away through the section)
Do you guys know what might be the problem, or how I should try playing? I'm not sure if its my bow or my play abilities. But, I feel like the bow hair has too much friction or something?
You're too close to the bridge, or not using enough bow, or putting too much pressure on the string. If you've got too much rosin on the bow it could also affect the sound, but most likely it's one of the first three factors. You can probably get the same volume by using more bow and letting up on the pressure. You need to play a bit closer to the bridge in high positions, but if you get too close you'll get a squeak.
