A busy place in our lives
During rush on a cold January morning in 2007 in Washington DC a man with a violin walked into the Metro Station. For the next 45 minutes he played six pieces of music from Bach. It was rush hour and thousands of people passed through the station at this time, with most on their way to a job.
Who took the time to make it a priority in their lives
After three minutes a middle aged man noticed the musician. Slowing his pace just a bit, he came to a complete stop for just a moment. Then he hurried on to his planned destination. About one minute, later a woman threw money into the till that the young violinist had placed in front of where he was standing. Not waiting she hurried on her way. After several more minutes another leaned against the walled and listened but after glancing at his watch, he was back on his way.
Finally someone paid real attention; it was a young boy about 3 years old. He was with his mother who appeared to be in a rush. Finally, the mother pushed the boy along but he continued to watch as he walked away. Several other children repeated this exact same scenario, with all of their parents dragging them away to their hurried destinations.
Thousands were given the opportunity to change their lives but...
In all, only 6 people took the time to stop and listen and none for very long. About 20 people put money at the musician feet. In total he collected a mere $32. When he finished, he pack up his violin and left without a single sound from anyone.
Who was this man? Joshua Bell, one of the finest violinists in the world today. And during this time he played one of the most intricate pieces ever written on a violin worth $3,500,000. Just two days before this impromptu concert Joshua Bell had played a sold out theater in Boston. Tickets sold for over $100 each.
What brought all of this about? The Washington Post did it as a social experiment about perception, taste, and what the priorities of people today are. What did we learn?
Did we see other priorities and walk past?
In life we lose perspective of what is beautiful and fun. The demands of a schedule can take the beauty out of life. When you have a job you become a slave to that job.
It was only the children who really took notice. Sure some of the people gave money to the violinist but they did it more without thought. The children gave him something even more valuable than money, they gave him time.
The amount of money given shows that value is not truly understood. Who would have imagined the violin they were listening to has such a value in an unlikely place. Or that the musician just a few days prior had helped to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars for his performance.
What does this mean for us in our everyday lives? We should evaluate how we want to enjoy our lives. Is it time for you to go back and evaluate where your priorities lie? Should you learn to be more like the children and pay attention to the beautiful things in life? Do you push people away from things of beauty and peace rather than have to the time to bring it to them?
