How Long Does It Take To Play Blues Guitar
The guitar is synonymous with the blues, in fact it would be hard
to imagine a good blues tune without that wailing guitar sound in
the background. Blues chords guitar, The key to learning how to play authentic blues
on guitar is to zero in on the techniques, chord voicing, chord
progressions and scales that will give you that blues sound.
Learning the guitar can be an overwhelming project if you don’t
know how to approach the learning process, the first step is to
focus specifically on the style of music YOU want to play, in
this instance we are focusing on blues guitar, the next step is
to break that style down into various moves (techniques) that are
relevant to that style.
Blues Guitar style
Techniques: Top 5 blues guitar techniques to learn
(a) Bends – there’s three types of bends used often used by blues
players.
* standard bend – raising the pitch of a note by bend (pushing or
pulling) the string sideways.
* pre-bend – this techniques begins with the string already bent
to a higher pitched note; blues guitar instruction, once the note is sounded the string is
allowed to return to it’s regular pitch.
* ghost bends – begin with a slide and finish with a bend giving
the listener the impression of a very long bend.
(b) Hammer-on’s – is a technique whereby two or more notes in a
musical phrase played on the same string are connected smoothly:
the first note of the phrase is played then a second note is
produced with the left hand by hammering a finger down on the
vibrating string thereby producing a second note without picking
it with the right hand.(I’m assuming you are right handed).
This technique is used when moving from a low note to a higher
note.
(c) Pull-off’s – are the opposite to the hammer-on’s; begin with
your starting note making certain you have a finger already
positioned at your second note (destination note); play your
first note then drag your left hand finger (assuming you are
right handed) downward to the floor thereby plucking the string
and playing your second note without actually picking it with
your right hand.
This technique is used when moving from a high to a lower note
where a smooth sound is required.
(d) Slides – produce a very smooth vocal sound similar to bends;
simply select your stating note then slide to your destination
note all the while keeping the pressure on the string.
(e) Vibrato – creates a very expressive singing style, primarily
used for long notes usually at the end of a phrase, the most
common style of vibrato is produced by a series of small bends in
lateral movement over the fretboard however in certain instances
a violin style vibrato whereby the guitarist’s finger moves in a
lengthwise movement (linear movement) is used to produce a more
subtle style of vibrato.
How long will it take? It’s possible to learn the basic blues techniques over a few weeks that’s the physical aspect of, blues chords guitar, playing blues on the guitar however, it’s important to remember that learning to play the blues is a lifetime project it’s about expressing your emotions in music via the guitar, the more life experiences you have the richer your musical story will become.
