How long to play the violin well at 40 with no musical experience.?

I am 40 years old, I have no musical experience. With tutoring and daily practice, how long to learn to play the violin well? Where to purchase a good student violin? Am I too old to even consider starting this?

That word "well" means different things to different people. As the person above me said, the violin is one of the most difficult instruments to learn in the beginning. Getting an acceptable sound is not easy at first. I would suggest the piano, push down on a key and it makes a sound.
