How much does a small reconditioned violin cost?
Violin for a 5 year old.
A reconditioned violin can cost as much or more than a new one does. This is one of those rare situations where renting can actually be advantageous if:
1. The entire rental can be applied to the purchase price of a later instrument
and
2. The student's hands and arm length are not already long enough to accommodate the larger instrument. If, as I suspect, your child needs a half size to three quarter size violin, he or she won't need one for long. If you cannot find an instrument for less than two hundred dollars in your area, consider a reputable rental program at your local music store.
The child's instructor may have more immediate and accurate information in this area, but if you have no one else to turn to, stores like Folk of the Wood

in Ruidoso New Mexico have online stores with inexpensive, but functional starter kits for sale. In the interests of impartiality, I have listed a few other stores that also sell online. I have not had any experience with them however, so be sure and ask what kind of a warranty they have, what their return policy is, and if they have a trade up program. A trade up program is individual with each store, but basically, they will offer you a trade in value for your old instrument based on it's condition when you need to purchase the next size or quality instrument. The more reputable stores will give a higher trade up value if the instrument is in perfect, or near to perfect condition.
This is only in the event that you have nothing in your local area of course, but you should know that the option is there. Hope this helps.
