Just about everyone loves the sound of the piano. It is quite a time consuming instrument to learn to play, but learning piano does have some great rewards. It is very satisfying to be able to sit down and play an instrument. You can guarantee that when you say play the piano there will be at least one person in the room who wishes they could play too.
If you do not already own a piano then you will need to get one. It could be second hand or new. If you are buying second hand and do not know very much about them, then think about paying a piano technician to come with you. It could save a lot of money in the long run as even a beginner needs a reasonable instrument to learn on.
Even when buying a new piano it could still be worth getting advice as they can be very expensive. Ask the dealer if you can get credit to upgrade a starter piano to a better instrument later on. Check on the warranty that they offer, and ask if they will give you a refund if the piano does not sound right acoustically when you get it home.
The next step is to learn how to play it. Piano lessons can take up a lot of time so make sure that you are ready for the commitment of practicing daily and attending weekly lessons. You will need to be disciplined about practice when you begin.
The next step is to find a teacher who is suitable for your needs. Friends recommendations are a very good place to start. If they do not know anyone then you could try looking in the local phone book. Another good place to try is the local college or university. There could well be someone teaching there who offers private lessons in their spare time.
You may find that the cost of a teacher varies quite dramatically. This is probably due to the teaching experience and qualifications of the individual teacher. Try to get the best that you can afford as it is very important to get good tuition when you are starting out.
See if its possible to get a trial lesson with your chosen teacher first before committing to a full semester of lessons. Its really important that you can get on with your teacher and that you will feel motivated and inspired by them. Learning piano should be fun.
