Spivey Hall is a world class concert hall located in Morrow, Georgia, just a few miles south of downtown Atlanta. The three-story curved structure of brick and glass has a beautiful lakeside setting on the campus of Clayton State University. The Hall presents more than 400 events annually. It is a popular venue for jazz and classical music concerts. Its frequent appearances on American Public Media's "Performance Today" have given the concert hall national recognition. Spivey is celebrating its 20th anniversary season in 2010-11.
Built in 1991, Spivey Hall was the vision of local land developer Walter Spivey and his wife, Emilie Parmalee Spivey. The Spiveys envisioned a small, elegant concert hall seating approximately 400 people. Their foundation donated $2.5 million toward the construction of the facility. The remainder of the funding came from individuals and corporate sponsors. The impressive visual centerpiece of Spivey is the magnificent 79-rank, 4,413 pipe Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ. The world class pipe organ was built in Padua, Italy, disassembled for shipping, and then installed on site. The casework of this organ stands 50 feet high and 37 feet wide. The Hall has become well known for its excellent organ concerts. Performances are enhanced by the facility's superior acoustics. The reverberations can be adjusted using the hall's seven movable acoustical curtains.
Spivey Hall has an innovative approach to educational programming. It has one of the state's largest educational outreach programs. Its award winning groups include the Spivey Hall Children's Choir and the Spivey Hall Young Artists. The Noteworthy Concert Series serves over 20,000 children each year from 17 counties in the Atlanta metro area. In addition, workshops and staff development courses are offered to area teachers.
Spivey Hall's 20th anniversary season includes some favorite artists who have performed at Spivey in past seasons, as well as artists who are making their Spivey Hall debut. The concerts include a variety of great music performed by a selection of internationally known artists. Programs include instrumental soloists and ensembles, as well as vocalists. There are also scheduled performances by the Clayton State University Department of Music, some of which are free to the public. Visitors are sure to find a performance to enjoy at Spivey Hall.
