Starting Violin? You Must Learn These Basics
The violin is a really adaptable instrument. If you learn it and treat it properly it will serve you well. If you care for it properly, it is also an investment. In this article you will learn the basics of how to use and care for a violin.
First, make sure that the bow hairs are taut. After that, put on rosin. Without rosin, bows will create poor to no sound. This is because there is not enough friction without it to make the proper sound. When applying, run the bow hairs slowly across the rosin evenly and slowly. Repeat as necessary.
After playing, use a soft, dry rag to remove excess rosin from the bow strings and remove any dust build up from the body of the violin. Dust left on the violin's body for too long will meld to the finish, so this is important.
When you store your violin, always use the case. Extreme temperatures, hot or cold, can do horrible things to your violin. If in a dry area, you may want to invest in a humidifier to avoid cracking or opening of the violin's seems.
High humidity and varying temperatures can also cause pegs to stick or only be able to move with difficulty. It is best to try and prevent this in the first place, but if it is too late you may use peg compound. This is basically lubrication for the pegs. Try not to use this regularly as anything you put on your violin will create a build up or residue in time.
Be careful when cleaning your violin. It is delicate. Common polishes can eat away at the varnish or deteriorate the acoustics. Water can damage it as a cleaner as well. Specialty polish is a must when you go to clean your violin, but you don't need to do this as often as you may think.
To some people a chin rest is necessary if you're going to play violin. This serves to reduce neck cramps, slipping, or skin irritation that might otherwise bother you.
If you're new to music and don't have the ear for it yet, you may opt to get an electric tuner as well. To tune the violin, simply tighten or loosen the pegs. Pitch is lowered when you turn the pegs left and heightened when you turn them right.
Having your instrument always in tune will help you to gain an ear for the music in time. After a while you will no longer need the tuner.
When starting anything it's always more difficult to play, so it is more important that you form the habit of playing than how long you play each time. You want it so there is never any mental resistance to picking up your violin and practicing. You can practice longer after you've reached this stage.
It is critical that you practice on a regular basis no matter what. Even if a particular session isn't going well, don't give up. Creating a habit makes it so there is no mental push needed to get through these times.
