Introduction To Learning Cello
Some people are not familiar with the large instrument that looks like a big violin that they see in orchestras. The actual name of the instrument is violoncello, which name is of Italian origin. The cello also belongs to the violin family. Similar in looks to the violin but larger, the cello is a bowed instrument with four strings. It has a lower pitch, while the violin has the highest pitch in their family, not to mention that cello is played in a sitting position.
A cello has eight main parts, namely the scroll which is the curve portion on the upper part, the pegs which are used for tuning the instrument, the finger board wherein the strings are attached, the strings which vibrate to create a tone, the bridge which supports the strings, the f-hole which allows the strings to vibrate efficiently by letting the air move freely in and out of the instrument, the tailpiece which holds the strings, and the spike or end stopper which supports the weight of the cello to prevent it from slipping. A cello is played using a bow, which is a stick like tool equipped with a strand of hair stretched from across its length. The hair is made from horse tail or synthetic materials. It is moved across the surface of the strings which causes the strings to vibrate and emit sounds.
To play the cello, the cellist sits and positions the instrument vertically between the knees with its spike touching the floor and supporting the body. The finger board finds a place on the cellist's shoulder. The fingers of one hand are positioned on the strings to locate the right pitch of the note. At the start, a person may experience awkwardness with shifting the fingers to find different pitches, but in time and with constant practice, this maneuver should come naturally and gracefully. The other hand holds the bow which is slid horizontally back and forth across the strings to create a tone.
A good cellist will naturally have expert skills in bowing. Bowing is said to be the most crucial part in playing the cello, because it determines the quality of the music. The bow is held with the tip of the fingers with the thumb placed at the bottom part to support the alignment of the curled fingers above the bow. It should be slid horizontally on the strings to produce a sound. One other skill to master is the smooth coordination of the left and right hand. One hand has the job of pressing on the strings, while the other is in charge of controlling the bow to create the vibrations necessary to elicit the desired music.
To learn cello effectively, hiring a teacher will be wonderful. Additionally, beginners are not likely to attain perfection immediately. A very vital factor to becoming a good cellist is continuous practice with enough patience and determination. It is important for a cellist to participate in orchestras or do solo performances to hone his skills and gain valuable experience. It will also serve as a measure of how well he is progressing. Bear in mind that it’s not enough to want to play the cello, it is important that you practice it as well.
