How much would I get for my violin?
My grandmother wants to sell a violin which is made by Christian Meisel or Meirel a violin maker from Klingenthal and it is dated nineteen twenty six inside. It is not stringed and neither is the bow. How much would I get for this violin?
Obviously first answerer is pullin' yer chain...
You're looking at anywhere from 300 to 3000 US dollars.
The Meisel family of luthiers dates back to 1660. Kurt Lothar Meisel has a book out about it all:
http://orgs.usd.edu/nmm/GiftShop/Books/Meisel.html
Going to the list of instruments from that same website, there does not seem to be a Christian Meisel. There is a Carl Christian Meisel who lived about a century or so before that fiddle was made.
There is a 'Franz Christian Meisel' identified at Musica Viva which is a workshop instrument from 1937.
Christie's sold a Christian Meisel that seems to match yours in terms of identification in 1994 for about $3k.
Skinners sold one that seemed to match both the ID and condition for $300 in 2003.
Based on all of this, I am going to surmise that you have a workshop instrument made by students of the famous Meisel luthier family, in a model line named after Carl Christian Meisel, one of the earlier/greater makers of that family. Depending on condition, anywhere from $300 to $3000 is a good range for a well-made workshop instrument from this era, so, that's where I get my estimate.
You really should go to a compentent luthier for an appraisal.
