Beginner Violinist... What should I do?
Hi! About a week ago, my cousin gave me her violin that has not been played in at least a couple years. It is a Franz Hoffmann Caprice model and my first violin. I don't know a thing about the violin, although I used to play cello and I've been playing guitar for years now. The violin itself is a little beat up: rosin is caked on the body and strings and there are a few knicks and dents on it. So, I'm well aware I need to get new strings and perhaps violin polish? I don't know what condition the bow is in and I might need a new one... I plan on trying out for my school's advanced orchestra this summer. So..what advice can you give me on what to do with the violin? Should I just take it in someplace? I can teach myself pretty proficiently, so is there a book you recommend for a beginner violinist? All help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Violin technique is not the same as cello technique, you know. Are the students in the advanced orchestra self-taught, and did they start recently? If not, you'll be at a serious disadvantage trying to get into that orchestra. There's really no way you can catch up to people who have had a few years of instruction by teaching yourself from a book for a few months.
Take the violin to a qualified string repair shop. There may well be more wrong with it than you can see. The rosin will need to be cleaned off (and don't use so much rosin that it starts to build up again) but if the nicks and dents are completely superficial, those don't need to be repaired. A luthier will check for small cracks or openings in the seams, check to see if the fingerboard is loose or starting to drop, check the condition of the bridge, pegs, and soundpost, and adjust things as necessary.
