Building an electric violin?
I want to build an electric violin, but there are a few problems. I'm not sure whether the thickness, density, or shape of the body will affect the sound of the violin (it will not be a hollow bodied acoustic, but I'm not sure if that means I'm free to experiment!). Also, I have absolutely NO knowledge of the whole electrical aspect of it. I do not know how I will go about plugging it in...Is it possible to create a solid wood violin and just attach one of these pickups to it? http://www.electricviolinshop.com/pickups.cfm Then just plug the pickup into an amp? I'm really confused. Are there electric violin kits out there?
PLEASE help if you can! Thank you.
You probably don't want to use an acoustic bridge or limpet mic for a solid bodied violin. Instead, go for a bridge transducer which is designed for full-electric violins. Here's a link: http://www.barberatransducers.com/violinpickups.html
The same website also has some hints on building your own violin: http://www.barberatransducers.com/building.html
Once you've built your violin, I would recommend a tube preamp (for an awesome tone) and a linear response amplifier (such as a keyboard amp) to keep it real. I have a Marshall LR500 combo amp which I would recommend. You can get tube preamps from £50 upwards.
Another thing to consider is whether to have a volume pot or a graphic equalizer on the violin body. Speak to whoever supplies your pickups about this as they are all different. If you have a simple bridge transducer with no eq, it is likely to come supplied already wired into a female 1/4" socket. You simply fix this to your violin and plug in a normal guitar lead between this and your amp/preamp. Whirlwind leads are my personal recommendation and they have a lifetime guarantee.
If you are plugging into a PA system, then get yourself a DI box for £35. It will have a balanced (mic lead) output for the PA system and a link (guitar lead) output for your monitor amp.
Have fun!
