Why does a loud violin sound different from ten violins playing in unison such that their total sound-intensity level is the same as for the single violin?
Very simple actually. It's impossible for those 10 violins to be exactly the same in structure or in timing (though they can be quite close.) In addition to this each one of those 10 is causing sound to originate in a different spot (they can't occupy the same place after all) which affects when the sound reaches you causing those 10 to form a single sound that is not quite perfectly synced and originating from different locations.
