What is a good violin to buy?

I need to know what is a good "step up" violin. My daughter has a Romanian one that we got cheap when she was in 6th grade (she's in 10th now)and we really need an up grade. What are the best "brands" like Romanian or Stradivarius and such for a reasonable price. Looking to spend maybe $1,000-$2,000 at most (used).

Stradivarius was an old Italian maker and his remaining violins go for at least $2,000,000 when one happens to become available.

What you need to do is ask her teacher's advice about where to shop, then go to a good string store and see what they have. If the teacher can come along while you shop that would be great. Any violinist past the beginner stage has formed ideas about what they like in terms of sound and playability and you need to find a violin that she will enjoy playing. Don't buy one without having her play it for a while.

Used violins are usually not less expensive than new except for the really cheap beginner ones. The reasonably good ones don't wear out and become less valuable.
