To play violin with piano accompaniment is almost as simple as just playing violin, and in some cases easier! However, for beginners who still aren't used to the feel of a piano assisting you and providing a background rhythm and harmony for your playing, it can be awkward and difficult to get used to. For that reason, I came up with some important pointers to play violin with piano accompaniment effectively. These are very simple but can improve your ability dramatically, so pay close attention and it will get you very far on the violin!
When playing violin with piano accompaniment, one of the most important things you can do is practice alongside the recording. This is extremely helpful because obviously your pianist will not always be there to assist you, so you need to make up for the lost time with a piano. It will be slightly awkward to practice with a recording because the audio cannot adjust to you the way a live player can, but the practicing will definitely improve your auditory understand of how to play violin with piano accompaniment for any piece.
Also, be sure to work out any intonation or shifting issues in the practice room before meeting your pianist for a rehearsal session. It's important not to treat rehearsals as practices, especially with playing violin with piano accompaniment, because you will hold back your progress putting the entire piece together with your accompanist. For that reason, make sure technique issues such as shifting, fingering and intonation are worked out in the practice room before rehearsal.
Lastly, it pays to let your pianist dictate the rhythm and try to follow along. While this may seem counterintuitive, the truth is a pianist typically has a more rational feel for rhythm on the violin simply because the piano accompaniment part is usually the simpler part, therefore it is easier to avoid rhythm and tempo errors. While the pianist is technically following you, listen to the piano while playing violin with piano accompaniment to aid your rhythm and tempo and keep yourself from straying too far off beat with the melody or with any advanced playing techniques.
Still more important than anything else you do when playing violin with piano accompaniment is the teacher you have by your side to help you learn it. I have always had excellent teachers and it has helped me figure things out faster on violin than those who are self taught.
