What things should I consider when buying a violin? What brand would you recommend?

Just like any instrument, if you're considering purchasing an instrument, go and try out several - which has the best sound and feel? You don't have to go into a store knowing exactly which instrument you want - and you don't have to buy an instrument the same day you try one out.

This is a big purchase and it's important to take your time with it - try out the instruments and comparison shop - price, sound, feel, quality, etc.

If possible, I would seriously recommend taking your violin teacher with you and asking him/her for advice as well. When it was time for me to purchase my instrument, I tried out a lot of instruments, had my teacher recommend some brands, and also come with me when I was making my final decision. He was also really helpful and was able to get us a discount on it because he's a teacher.

Sorry, I couldn't give you specific answers to your questions - but I think you just have to try out several violins. And I think sound is probably one of the most important things when considering an instrument.
