Violin Brands – The History

It's amazing to know how violin brands came a long a way in history. Perhaps only a few people know where the violin first originated. Though not an absolutely important topic to tackle about, it's nice to know the roots of the instrument we are holding today. This way, we can better appreciate violin brands and choose which amongst them deserve our purchase.

First Makers

Violins were first made by the Indian race. It was primarily named Ravan Hatta or Ravanastron. The physical characteristics of this instrument were not exactly the same as the violin we have today. But it was also played with a bow and shaped like our modern musical device.

The Early Fiddlers

The first fiddlers came from Mongolia and Turkey. Their instrument was made only of two strings and a decorative piece at the neck or end part of the device. It was played using a bow with horsehair. This legacy can still be seen in the different violin brands we have today.

Eventually, the musical device was introduced to other parts of the world. It was sent to the Middle East and Asian countries like China and Japan. During the 16th century, the violin began to make a name in the West, specifically Italy.

Modern Violin Brands

Older versions of violins only had two strings. But after its spread in Europe, the subsequent instruments that were developed had 4 strings like the contemporary styles we have today. Many say that Andrea Amati first created the true violin in the year 1555.

From then on, violins became very popular among the noble people and street musicians alike. It was also during this time that different violin brands had their products carved and decorated.

The 18th Century

The most famous violin brands were introduced during the 16th – 18th century. Here are popular violin sources that are still known in the world today:

• Brescia – a school that is active in violin-making during the 1st half of the 16th century.
• Amati family in Italy
• Stradivari family in Cremona – Their violins had unique names and are currently sold with hefty tag prices.

Significant changes in the instrument's form and function were developed in the same era. The angle and length of the neck changed, and the bass bar gained additional weight. Aside from the violin's physical form, much of its function has also been altered. Today, the musical device is built with precision and perfection to produce the best possible sound.
