Is there a way to make your acoustic violin sound like a different instrument?
I saw once in this movie this girl made her acoustic violin sound like a electric guitar. Is that possible in real life if so how? Oh and what are probably the top 5 brands to buy a violin? I scherl and roth a good brand to buy? Whats a rosin?
Yes, that's definitely possible. You could even make your own homemade pickup for about $5 with parts from radio shack. You'd need a piezo disc (from a piezo buzzer) some wire, solder and a 1/4" jack. If you need help, you can check here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/homemade_musical_instruments/
Of course once you have your pickup made, you'll need to have an amp and electric guitar effects.

As far as rosin:
Rosin, formerly called colophony or Greek pitch (Pix græca), is a solid form of resin obtained from pines and some other plants, mostly conifers, produced by heating fresh liquid resin to vaporize the volatile liquid terpene components. It is semi-transparent and varies in color from yellow to black. At room temperature rosin is brittle, but it melts at stove-top temperatures. It chiefly consists of different resin acids, especially abietic acid.
